4No-drill installation that works well, but be prepared for a little extra effort
By Surrealone
I installed this product on my 2004 GMC Sierra and love it. I can now open the talgate and simply let it fall; the product's pneumatic piston 'catches' the tailgate and slowly lowers it into position, even on days that are around or are slightly below freezing. (I've not experienced substantially colder weather, yet, but I think it'll do just fine.)

There's a caveat, though. Despite being a no-drill installation you'll likely need a little extra time and effort to install the product. First and foremost, if you order it make sure you check the parts that arrive against the parts list. I had read reports of missing nuts and mine arrived as no exception, as it came with one jam nut instead of two. Since this nut is simply a nylon-threaded lock nut I headed off to Lowe's to get one that fit. While there I also got some blue Loctite since the bolts that the instructions tell you to remove are threalocked .... and threadlocker should be re-applied prior to reinstallation of a bolt. (The instructions don't bother to mention this or include Loctite and I'm a little retentive about such things.)

Second, the instructions were a horribly dark photocopy -- that was virtually impossible to read. To resolve this I hopped online, located the Stabilus website (which apparently aquired EZ Down or the product line), and found the instructions for Chevrolet vehicles (which work just as well for GMC's of equivalent size/make). To save others trouble, here's a link to those instructions: [...]

With instructions, blue Loctite, and all necessary parts in hand installation took only 10 minutes. However, the time to gather those things plus the install time ... took the better part of 1.5 hours (Lowe's is 30 mins away from me). If you want a decent tailgate damper and don't mind a little extra cost/labor/effort to get one, then this should work just fine provided you'v arrived at it by selecting the correct part number for your vehicle type.

1Not worth it
By John
When I installed this item the parts did not fit correctly. One of the parts rubbed against the tailgate removing the paint. Another bolt was to long and wouldn't allow the tailgate to open after I closed it. Had to users a pry bar to ease the tailgate open to remove the bolt.

5Works great & everything included now
By Happily Retired
I received this item earlier than estimated. Having read reviews commenting on parts missing I was ready for same with my order but was happy to see all the parts included and even a bottle of threadlocker too. Installation went smoothly in a few minutes with a 13mm wrench for the stock bolts and 14mm for the new locknuts and it works great. My truck is a 2005 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT crew cab 4x4. The assist part number is DZ43100. It's still heavy to raise of course but a lot safer to lower now with the kit installed. This item is definitely worth the money.
